The
Unlikely Corporate Rock Band: Phish Page 6
In Conclusion
So
how is it possible that Phish fans simultaneously pride themselves
on listening to a non-commercial music and yet are apparently
oblivious to the commercial forces that Phish has taken part in?
A good explanation to this could be paralleled to Dave Laing's
explanation of the mainstreaming of punk style. Phish's subculture
has remained "fully outside the wider cultures" and
has thus been able to maintain a "situation of coexistence
with the dominant system and its priorities" (Laing). In
other words, the product that Phish sells is mass marketed to
and bought by Phish fans not the entire public, and this is the
essence of how two conflicting agendas on commercialism can coexist.
Of
course, many arguments could be made as to why or how Phish is
a commercial band. Some might say that they have become nothing
more than a spoke in the wheel of a record company; others might
argue that Phish's carte blanche over their fan base allows them
put out anything and have it readily digested. Any of these could
possibly be valid arguments upon proper research and examination;
however, one argument that would not be valid is that Phish has
been immune to these commercial forces.
