Small Group Communication Patterns (page 2) The
complimentary principal also seemed to be guiding the women in their pre-meeting
conversations. In the thirty minutes of discussions before the meeting got underway,
not one negative comment could be heard. Regardless of what one woman said, her
counter-part instinctively responded in a positive, upbeat manner. One woman remarked
that she just couldn't stop eating since the terrible terrorist attacks on the
World Trace Center, and her friend replied that she shouldn't be worried because
things would be back to normal before she knew it. This complimentary principal
extended into the meeting as well. Several times during the meeting, a woman would
say something negative about herself or her progress, and the instructor would
always come back with an optimistic retort.
Overall, the women were able to communicate with each other extremely well in
a one-on-one setting, but when the group got together as a whole most of them
fell victim to situational anxiety.
