Don't Criticize What You Can't
Understand (page 3)
Finally,
it is most important that a critic hold their own work to their own standards
of criticism. What would other critics think? It is easy to criticize if you are
not the one being criticized. Therefore, in order to do the most credible work
possible, a critic must do work that he or she would feel comfortable having criticized.
If they can hold their own work to their own standards, they should be fine.
Critics make up an important part of the media circle and help maintain an honest
relationship between the artist and the fans. A critic's main purpose is to inform.
In order to inform in the most credible fashion, a critic must be informed, stay
current but aware of the past, hold no biases or be aware of them, and be up to
their own standards of criticism. 1
